Learning with scientific simulations: The affordances of technology for studying and scaffolding students’ learning processes and proposed directions for Learning Sciences research.
Friday, October 19, 2012 1:00PM to 2:30PM
LSRI 1535A

Several projects will be described as exemplars of research that integrate theories about scientific literacy and cognitive affordances in order to: 1) characterize students' learning from and with visualizations, 2) develop materials for science learning, and 3) orient learners toward deep understanding. I will also describe new approaches for data analysis of students' log files that allow for both rigorous real-time assessment of students’ science inquiry processes as well as real-time scaffolding of these processes. Data will be discussed with respect to how these new technologies and methods have changed what we know about students’ learning.
