Science learning occurs in various settings and across the lifespan. The emerging field of informal science education seeks to understand this learning, providing insight into a largely untapped domain. This talk will discuss the ways in which educational research can bridge informal and formal science learning, and can be leveraged when creating science programs. It will also investigate the power of teaching on students' attitudes, knowledge, and engagement in science. All these ideas will be linked through the common thread of astronomy, as both a goal for content learning and as a source of inspiration.
