Decisions, Decisions: Assessing Students' and Preservice Teachers' Use of Scientific Evidence Marcelle Siegel, UC San Francisco (Click name for speaker's biography) Decision making is a critical skill for learners - both students and teachers - yet is rarely taught or assessed. One of the four goals for school science, according to the National Science Education Standards, is "Students [will] use appropriate scientific processes and principles in making personal decisions." My approach includes assessing students' personal and societal decisions and how they use evidence. I examine language and ways to make assessments more equitable for English learners. I am also interested in teachers' instructional decisions. I will discuss a series of studies that developed different methods for examining how evidence is used and how the situation is modeled.
