The Summer Research Institute focuses on “Scientific teaching” and aims to create classrooms that reflect the true nature of science and also promotes teaching as a scholarly endeavor. Scientific teaching” emphasizes methods that encourage students to construct new knowledge and to develop scientific ways of thinking, provide both students and instructors with feedback about learning, and foster success for all students. Michael Muller and Robert Paul Malchow, faculty at UIC, attended the 2009 Summer Research Institute and will describe the topics covered, discuss what they learned, and give some examples of “Scientific Teaching”.
