Privileging mathematics and equity in teacher preparation: rethinking mathematics methods courses to advance marginalized youth in mathematics education Julia Aguirre, University of Washington - Tacoma (Click name for speaker's biography) While calls for more culturally responsive mathematics pedagogies continue to be made, pre-service mathematics teacher preparation has been slow to respond particularly in relation to mathematics methods courses that explicitly engage issues of equity (e.g. roles of race, class, culture, and language) to advance mathematics learning of children from historically marginalized communities (e.g. African American, Latino, First Nations, English Learner and low income). How do we prepare beginning teachers to teach rich and rigorous mathematics, build on children’s mathematical thinking, leverage community knowledge as a resource, and take on a transformative critical approach to challenge inequity and injustice with mathematics? In this presentation, a Latina mathematics educator will discuss her efforts to create a pre-service mathematics method course with an integrated approach that explicitly addresses these demands. Her talk will highlight the strategies, tensions and push-back encountered with this approach. Implications for mathematics education research and teacher preparation will be discussed.
