The Learning Sciences PhD program is housed within UIC’s Learning Sciences Research Institute, which is dedicated to supporting multidisciplinary research on learning, and the design and evaluation of learning environments. The program is ideal for students who have earned a Master’s degree in any discipline, and/or have significant professional experience, and have an intense interest in studying how people learn in that discipline.
Faculty and doctoral students in LSRI conduct research on learning in many diverse contexts, including (but not limited to) schools, workplaces, museums, and community settings, often in combination with design work and/or evaluation studies. The program offers a space for scholars and researchers from diverse areas, including the natural sciences, social and behavioral sciences, humanities, engineering, health sciences and computer science, to collaborate on projects that aim to investigate and improve learning.
Graduates are trained to use a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives of the learning sciences, including cognitive psychology and sociocultural theory, design-based research, and discipline-specific theoretical frameworks. Program faculty represent leading learning scientists working from within disciplinary departments across campus, such as chemistry, computer science, mathematics, psychology, and education.
UIC has a long history of working relationships with many formal and informal educational institutions in and around Chicago, including Chicago Public Schools and numerous museums and cultural institutions. Many LSRI research projects place doctoral students “in the field” from their first year to research how people learn in authentic contexts, and to work collaboratively with community stakeholders to design innovative learning environments. Moreover, Chicago is a world-class city that is an exciting place to live and offers an endless range of activities to enrich graduate student life.
Each fall, we typically welcome five to seven doctoral students into the program. All full-time students are guaranteed five years of graduate student support that include full‐tuition scholarships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and competitive fellowships. Doctoral students also receive support to attend professional conferences annually as part of their program of study. With our unique interdisciplinary structure and our commitment to discipline-based research, doctoral students also have the opportunity to seek a master’s degree in another discipline as they advance toward the Ph.D. in Learning Sciences.

Applications require a graduate student application form and fee, all university transcripts, graduate record exam (GRE) scores, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation.
