The Learning Sciences Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a Visiting Senior Research Specialist for Project READI to support the work of a federal grant housed at LSRI.
Senior Research Specialists work with participating Project READI staff, districts, schools, administrators, and teachers to support continuous improvement in content area literacy specifically with evidence-based argumentation with multiple texts in grades 6 through 12.
The primary functions of the Senior Research Specialist are to support all aspects of the reading for understanding grant, Project READI, and serve as a liaison between the university and participating districts and schools. The Senior Research Specialist is expected to fulfill these responsibilities with minimal supervision and play an integral part in the research process. Key responsibilities include the following:
1) Author and/or co-author research reports, presentations, publications
o Take responsibility for preparing reports associated with the project
o Author and co-author articles for presentation and publications in scholarly journals
o Organize, participate and present in scientific symposia and conferences
2) Support project team on research planning and development
o Work on designated research projects
o Collaborate with the Principal Investigator on developing research questions and the research methodology and be responsible for executing the research methodology
o Suggest and defend the use of alternative methodologies
o Be responsible for data collection, analysis of the data, electronic records and databases related to the research data
3) Support personnel associated with the research grant
o Supervise and mentor junior personnel on the project
o Design, plan, and conduct professional development sessions
o Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and project partners.
4) Remain knowledgeable of current developments in the field
Preferred Qualifications:
o Doctorate (preferred) or Master’s required in secondary education, learning sciences or learning sciences-related field
o 3 years experience in a major research setting
o Specialized education and training in a variety of research protocols
o Experience teaching middle grades or high school content areas (literature, science or history)
o Experience working in a coaching role
o An understanding of diverse student populations

Visiting Research Specialists must be knowledgeable about current practices and research findings in the learning sciences. The Research Specialist in Learning Sciences must be especially alert to new methods of assessment, peer interventions, and classroom interventions. In addition, knowledge of research design, methodology, and analysis are essential.
The primary functions of Visiting Research Specialists are to support all aspects of federally funded grants and serve as a liaison between the university and participating districts, schools, administrators, and teachers. Key responsibilities include the following:
• Collect (student work, interviews, classroom observations), manage (enter, digitize, transcribe), and analyze (code) project data. Enter and organize large quantities of data in SPSS and Excel format for analysis. Monitor data collection methods for quality control and efficacy, and report to PIs when appropriate.
• Code and analyze field notes, observation videos, interviews and student data.
• Review literature related to research design and measurement.
• Train and supervise undergraduate research assistants assigned to the project, organize schedules, and collect and manage data.
• Manage the scheduling of teacher interviews, classroom observations, and student protocols with teachers, and coordinate with project team members.
• Serve as a community liaison at schools and other institutions where there are opportunities for formal and informal learning to present information, answer questions, and relay concerns to the project’s research staff.
• Maintain electronic records and databases for grant-related activities. User knowledge of spreadsheet, statistical analysis, and relational database applications is desired.
• Collaborate with the project team on program planning and development.
• Review learning sciences literature to inform the design, development, and researching of learning environments, both formal and informal in subject matter content areas such as physical and natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, and humanities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Masters in learning sciences or learning sciences related field preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills required. An understanding of diverse student populations is preferred.
